About

Deirdre McLoughlin graduated with a BA in Humanities from Trinity College Dublin.

In a studio on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam a lump of clay and an invitation to make something was, she did not know it then, to be her future. Between times in the studio making forms to an end she did not comprehend she acted in short movies taking classes in the Stanislavski method.

The deaths of the ten hunger strikers in Long Kesh brought her to a mental crisis. She came out of it knowing what she was and was not. She realized the shapes she was making in the studio were a language of expression. As a composer finds sound, a painter colour and a writer words she found form in clay and it was what people called art and it was necessary. There was nothing for it but to skill herself and to this end she went to Kyoto where the best in her field, the Sodeisha Group, were based. She spent three and a half years there - setting up a rough studio on the edge of Kiyomizu. Honing her coiling skills under the eye of Tosai Sawamura I she closely followed the works of Yasuo Hayashi and Arioka Susumu both of whom were to subsequently influence her work. With an introduction from Regina Altherr to Gallery Beni Kyoto she held her first solo exhibition in 1984. She then travelled throughout China alone from Hong Kong to Kashgar visiting areas of interest in the ceramic field and cultural sites amongst which the far end of the Great Wall, the Bezeklik Caves, Terracotta Warriors…

McLoughlin has taught Irish to the Dutch and English to the Japanese, she has been a singer and a cleaner. She has acted as external examiner, given workshops and occasionally lectured. Exhibitions and awards follow her working path. She is based in Amsterdam with a studio in Xpositron, an eco friendly facility on the edge of town.
She has said, “Everything I know is in my work, I don’t always understand what I know.”
